Things to Do in Skardu — Top Experiences in the Karakoram
From glacial lakes and cold deserts to 8,000-metre expeditions — the definitive list of experiences in Gilgit-Baltistan's most extraordinary destination.
Visit Shangrilla Lake
Known locally as "Heaven on Earth," Shangrilla Lake — also called Lower Kachura Lake — sits at the edge of Skardu city and delivers an experience that earns the name. The still, turquoise water mirrors the surrounding peaks in the early morning, creating reflections that stop every photographer mid-step. Boat rides are available through the day, and the lakeside restaurant offers a setting that few anywhere in the world can match. Go at sunrise if you can — the light turns the mountains gold before the world wakes up.
Explore Deosai National Park
At 4,114 metres above sea level, Deosai Plains is the second-highest plateau on Earth — a vast, rolling wilderness where the sky feels closer than anywhere you have ever stood. In summer it is carpeted with wildflowers in every direction, and the Himalayan brown bears that roam here are found almost nowhere else on the planet. Access requires a jeep and is possible only between June and September before winter snows close the plateau entirely. Give it a full day and bring layers regardless of the month.
Trek to K2 Base Camp
The approach to the base camp of the world's second-highest mountain is one of the great trekking journeys on earth. The route passes through the Baltoro Glacier and the confluence at Concordia — a natural amphitheatre surrounded by four 8,000-metre peaks simultaneously. It requires a licensed guide, full expedition logistics, and a minimum of 14–18 days in the field. This is not a casual hike — it is a serious mountaineering commitment that rewards those who take it on with memories that last a lifetime.

The Amacha dynasty fort in Shigar Valley is over 600 years old and has been meticulously restored by the Aga Khan Trust for Culture — it now operates as a heritage hotel and museum, preserving one of the most significant historical sites in Gilgit-Baltistan. The drive to Shigar through apricot orchards and river valleys is itself worth the journey. The surrounding village is a living example of Balti architecture and culture that has remained largely unchanged for centuries.
Sarfaranga Cold Desert
Pakistan's only cold desert is also one of the highest deserts in the world — a surreal stretch of golden sand dunes framed by the Karakoram peaks. The juxtaposition of desert and mountain is so visually striking that it regularly stops first-time visitors in disbelief. A jeep safari across the dunes is the recommended way to experience it properly. At dusk, the light on both the sand and the surrounding peaks creates photographic conditions that are nearly impossible to replicate anywhere else.
Sadpara Lake
Just 9 kilometres from Skardu city centre, Sadpara Lake is the most accessible major lake in the region — and one of the most beautiful. The glacial water is an astonishing shade of turquoise, the shoreline is easily walkable, and fishing and boating are available throughout the season. It works perfectly as a half-day visit either as an introduction to the region on your first day or as a quiet, peaceful afternoon after more demanding excursions. The Sadpara Dam sits nearby and adds a dramatic engineering note to the landscape.
Fairy Meadows & Nanga Parbat View
Fairy Meadows is one of Pakistan's most iconic viewpoints — a high alpine meadow offering a direct, unobstructed view of Nanga Parbat, the world's ninth-highest mountain. Getting there combines a rough jeep track from Raikot Bridge with a three-hour uphill trek through pine forest. Camping is available at the meadow itself. At sunrise, when Nanga Parbat catches the first light of the day while the valley below is still in darkness, the view is utterly unforgettable.
Attabad Lake & Hussaini Bridge
Attabad Lake was formed in 2010 when a catastrophic landslide blocked the Hunza River, flooding the valley behind it and submerging two villages beneath its surface. What resulted is a lake of impossible, vivid turquoise — one of the most striking bodies of water in the entire Karakoram. Nearby, the Hussaini Suspension Bridge crosses a gorge above the river in a way that tests most travellers' nerve. The combination of the lake, the bridge, and the drive along the Karakoram Highway makes this a full day well spent.
Khaplu Palace & Ghanche Valley
The 19th-century Khaplu Palace sits in a remote corner of Ghanche Valley, hours beyond Skardu on a road that passes through increasingly dramatic scenery. Restored by the Aga Khan Trust for Culture and now operating as a heritage hotel, the palace blends Tibetan, Balti and Mughal architectural influences in a setting that feels entirely removed from the modern world. For travellers who want to venture beyond the well-trodden circuit and experience a genuinely unhurried, culturally rich destination, Khaplu is among the best in the region.
Manthoka Waterfall
Manthoka is among the highest and most powerful waterfalls in Pakistan — a thundering cascade of glacial meltwater that descends through the Kharmang Valley with remarkable force. A short, accessible walk from the roadside brings you close enough to feel the spray and hear the sound reverberating off the surrounding rock. Visit in July or August when glacial melt is at its peak and the waterfall reaches its most dramatic volume. It is often included as a day trip alongside Satpara Lake for a full day of natural landscapes.
