Skardu Travel Guide

Everything you need to plan a journey to Pakistan's most extraordinary destination — the gateway to K2, Fairy Meadows and the Karakoram.

Why Visit

Skardu — Gateway to the Karakoram

Skardu is the capital of Baltistan District in Gilgit-Baltistan, Pakistan, sitting at 2,226 metres above sea level along the banks of the Indus River. It is the traditional staging point for mountaineering expeditions to K2, Broad Peak, and the Gasherbrum group — but the city and its surrounding valleys deserve far more than a transit stop.

The Skardu basin is ringed by cold deserts, turquoise glacial lakes, apricot orchards and ancient Balti forts that predate Mughal rule. Deosai Plains — the world's second-highest plateau — begins just hours from the city centre. Fairy Meadows, the approach to Nanga Parbat base camp, is reachable in a day. The Shigar and Hushe valleys branch outward through landscapes that most of the world has never seen.

For travellers seeking raw, unhurried wilderness with genuine local culture — Skardu is without equal.

Getting Here

How to Get to Skardu

By Air

PIA and Air Sial operate daily flights from Islamabad International Airport (ISB) to Skardu Airport (SKT), with a flight time of approximately 50 minutes and spectacular views of the Karakoram en route. Flights are weather-dependent and can be cancelled or delayed — always allow extra days at either end of your trip. Book well in advance during peak season (June–September).

By Road

From Islamabad, the drive along the Karakoram Highway (N-35) takes 15–18 hours via Chilas and Gilgit. From Gilgit, Skardu is 6–7 hours east along the Indus River. The road itself is a journey worth taking — dramatic gorges, glaciers, ancient Buddhist petroglyphs and Karakoram vistas line every section of the route.

Arrival Tips

Arrange airport pickup through your hotel in advance — all Alnoor Escapes properties include complimentary transfers with direct bookings. Carry sufficient Pakistani rupees as card acceptance is limited outside major hotels. Confirm your room reservation well ahead of arrival during summer months, when Skardu accommodations fill quickly.

Practical Information

Visa & Entry

Most nationalities require a visa to enter Pakistan. An e-visa is available for citizens of many countries through the NADRA online portal, and visa-on-arrival is available at Islamabad airport for some nationalities. Check requirements specific to your passport well in advance as processing times vary. No additional permit is required for tourism in Skardu city or standard destinations.

Currency & Banking

The currency is the Pakistani rupee (PKR). ATMs are available in Skardu city centre but can be unreliable — withdraw sufficient cash before leaving Islamabad. Most hotels and restaurants operate on a cash-only basis. Alnoor properties handle payment arrangements through WhatsApp at the time of booking for maximum convenience.

Connectivity & SIM

Jazz and Zong offer the best mobile coverage in Skardu. Local SIM cards can be purchased at Islamabad airport with a passport. WiFi is available at all Alnoor Escapes properties. Mobile signal becomes intermittent or absent in remote valleys and at altitude — download offline maps (Google Maps or maps.me) before heading out.

Altitude & Health

Skardu sits at approximately 2,226 m above sea level. Most visitors arrive from sea-level cities and may feel mild altitude adjustment for the first day — stay hydrated, rest on arrival, and ascend gradually if heading higher.
